First, thanks to Charlotte Running Company for hosting our run series.
Thanks also to Green Apple Sports & Wellness for their continued support.
Last week, a messenger appeared at my front door
with a telegram from
Sharksbite HQ. Footfeathers informed me that he had been watching our
run times get slower each week and he demanded an improvement. So this
week, we had the first running of the Sharksbite Mako Fun Run, a
cleverly disguised cat-and-mouse run designed to push you to run faster.
Did it work? Oh yeah! We had 12 PR's from the 38 runners who attended.
The concept is simple, take everyone's average finishing time, subtract
it from 60 minutes, and you are left with your starting time.Everyone
starts separately so that ideally, when the clock strikes 60 minutes,
everyone should be finishing at the same time. I did get a lot of
strange looks when I told people that they would be standing around for
anywhere from 5-35 minutes waiting to go.
As the clock ticked away, each runner toed the line and took off when
their start time came. Brad Popple had fallen asleep waiting on his
start time to come up, but thankfully I found a half-eaten burrito in
the dumpster, and the smell of that refried-bean goodness aroused him
from his slumber. I pointed down the road and yelled "You're up, go get
em". Like a shark following a chum trail, his mission started. Mr Popple
finished in a blistering 24:48 time, although unfortunately, he was
beaten across the finish line by superwoman Kim Pickerling, pushing her
two children in a stroller. After watching Kim cross the line, I
suddenly felt ashamed for whining about the weight of my water bottles
on long runs.
The finish was a constant stream of runners, who quickly made haste for
a well deserved cup of ice cold water and camaraderie.
After tallying up the results from today's run, the unofficial points
standing has been posted below. Matt Chisholm still has a hold on the
men's first place by 27 points, although one missed run will quickly drop
him into 4th ...no pressure Matt! Eimar Goggin has a solid lead in the
women's first place by 173 points....Eimear just makes it look easy!
Come out again next week where you get a shot to prove your consistency
of performance in the Sharksbite Bracket Race. You have to predict your
finishing time before the race starts. No timing equipment allowed, so
leave your watches in your car. Bonus points will be awarded to those
who get closest to their predicted time.
Please email me with any name or time corrections. (brian.trotter@gmail.com)
See you all next week,
Brian (Red Eagle)
